(1) Beginnings

Three years ago I undertook a charity drive in an old car across Morocco, Mauritania and Mali, a trip that opened my eyes to the wild and rugged beauty of northwest Africa with its isolated coastline and big desert skies. I came away from the trip with great memories of the places I had seen and, in particular, the people I had met; people who may be poor by any material yardstick but so rich in goodwill and human kindness. So when Sue suggested a similar trip for 2013 it was, as they say, a ‘no brainer’.

Initially we had planned to do more or less the same trip early in 2013: through Morocco, Mauritania and Mali. Unfortunately a war got in the way making Mali too dangerous for westerners. So now we are heading through Morocco, taking a more off road route through the Atlas Mountains, into the desert and then across to the Atlantic coastline before heading down to the Morocco/Mauritanian border. Here we will sell the car to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital before heading home.

We have a car (an old Audi A4). We have a ticket to France on the Eurotunnel.  And we have a date and location to be in southern Spain to meet other groups doing the same trip. Now what else is there we need to sort out?
