Some time ago a guy called Julian took off in an old banger to North West Africa. His plan was simple in its concept if not in execution: he planned to track as best he could the famous Paris to Dakar rally - with its almost limitless budgets - in his clapped out car. Ten years on and he has developed the idea into a major charity/fund raising exercise. Each year groups with old cars leave Britain and nurse them on routes to Bamako and Timbuktu in Mali or Dakhla in Western Sahara where they hand the cars over to local charity organisations or sell them to raise money for their own good causes. Once you start there is no external support: it is up to those taking part to choose with whom they wish to travel from the cars participating, to decide their routes and sort out their own problems. Over the years thousands have been raised to help the needy in Africa and support worthwhile causes in Britain while at the same time providing a great adventure for participants.
Part of the aim of the trip is to travel off road through Morocco as much as possible. We know that there is a mixture of 4WD and 2WD cars in the group we will meet in Southern Spain. Those of us with 2WD will necessarily not follow the same routes as the others but we still expect to be off the beaten track and away from the tarmac wherever possible. We have been given ten potential routes, drawn from the experience of previous years, although these are dotted over the country and do not provide a natural and continuous route from north to south. We will need to pick and choose those that sound good and within the capabilities of the car and make up the rest. As of now we have not decided anything other than we want to make sure we do routes through the mountains, through the desert and along the beach. The details of exactly which routes we take will be the subject of debate with the other 2WD participants in Tarifa, southern Spain and of course everything is subject to change. Watch this space…
